Hacker uses Firefox extension to steal millions of dollars in Crypto Assets Security Alert
Recent reports indicate that a hacker organization has stolen more than one million dollars worth of crypto assets through various means over the past five weeks. This organization has utilized 150 specially modified Firefox extensions, nearly 500 malicious executable files, and dozens of phishing websites to carry out the attacks.
According to security experts, attacks through Firefox extensions are the most effective method in this operation, bringing most of the profits to hackers. This attack technique primarily targets popular Crypto Assets wallets such as MetaMask and Exodus. Hackers first upload seemingly harmless versions of the extensions, and after passing the review, they update the malicious code to bypass the security checks of the app store.
To increase credibility, the hacker also forged a large number of positive reviews. Once users download these disguised extensions, their wallet credentials will be stolen, leading to the theft of Crypto Assets.
In addition, hackers have implanted nearly 500 malicious Windows executable files on some websites distributing pirated software. These files contain various harmful programs, such as credential stealing tools, ransomware, and trojans.
This incident once again reminds Crypto Assets users to be extra vigilant, to treat software and extensions from unknown sources with caution, and to regularly check whether the tools they use are safe and reliable. At the same time, major app stores and software platforms also need to further strengthen their security review mechanisms to prevent similar attacks from happening again.
