Abstract generation in progress

ChatGPT is about to celebrate its one-year anniversary, and OpenAI is planning significant initiatives. Undoubtedly, since its launch, ChatGPT has brought an amazing rise in momentum for OpenAI.

Revenue has significantly risen, providing OpenAI with a breather.

According to reports, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently revealed during a communication with employees that the AI chatbot has performed excellently this year, generating approximately $1.3 billion in revenue for the company.

Compared to OpenAI's total revenue of only 28 million dollars in 2022, this figure is remarkable. An annual revenue rise of nearly fifty times is almost every tech startup's dream.

Earlier reports indicated that OpenAI was seeking to sell existing shares at a record valuation of $90 billion, while expecting revenue to exceed $1 billion in 2023. This goal has now been easily achieved, and with nearly three months remaining in 2023, OpenAI's revenue scale is expected to reach even higher levels.

For many users, ChatGPT has become a superpower. Whether it's a novice programmer looking to quickly browse JavaScript code or a marketer seeking creative inspiration, they can all benefit from it. No wonder OpenAI can enjoy such amazing rise.

The major challenges faced by OpenAI

Despite having powerful allies like Microsoft, OpenAI still faces multiple threats. Only by seriously addressing these challenges can it maintain its rapid rise momentum.

The primary challenge comes from the outside: OpenAI needs to maintain a "moat" that may be shrinking.

For tech companies trying to thwart competitors, the concept of a "moat" is very popular. In fact, these companies establish a huge moat by developing products that are difficult to replicate.

Although OpenAI has a first-mover advantage in the competition, ChatGPT's rivals are also actively investing resources to develop their own versions, which may weaken OpenAI's moat.

Google is one of the biggest threats facing OpenAI. The Gemini multimodal large model that Google is developing is highly anticipated. Gemini is designed to compete with OpenAI's currently most powerful GPT-4 and is expected to be launched later this year.

At the same time, the open-source community has been working hard to develop another artificial intelligence model. The goal is to replicate the performance of commercial tools like ChatGPT, but to provide it for free.

If GPT-4's open-source competitors can match or surpass its performance, OpenAI may face a tough battle to maintain its paid service user base.

There is currently no conclusion on whether the recently added features of "viewing, listening, and speaking" in ChatGPT are seen as game changers for users or merely hype.

More importantly, the second challenge facing OpenAI seems to come from within.

It is reported that OpenAI has quietly modified the "core values" section listed on its official website.

The original core values include: boldness, thoughtfulness, humility, impact-driven, collaboration, rise.

The current core values have become: AGI focus, strong and vigorous spirit, scalability, doing things that people like, and team spirit.

OpenAI chose to remove the term "deeply considered" while emphasizing its "AGI focus" and the need for "strong and vigorous".

The shift in the core values of this enterprise is concerning, indicating that OpenAI will prioritize achieving AGI.

To achieve the goal of AGI, OpenAI is accelerating the speed of product updates, continuously launching the latest products such as the native painting model DALL-E 3 and the image recognition model GPT-4v for ChatGPT.

ChatGPT's one-year anniversary, OpenAI is planning significant actions.

According to reports, on the first anniversary of ChatGPT, OpenAI plans to hold its first global developer conference on November 6. At that time, OpenAI will launch a major annual update for ChatGPT, including providing developers with increased memory storage capabilities and significantly reducing API usage costs by 95%. This will greatly lower the costs for developers building on GPT, enabling them to develop more powerful applications.

This upgrade is referred to as the Stateful API, which creates applications more economically by remembering the conversation history of queries, thus reducing the originally high costs.
