Bloomberg: If SEC Commissioner Crenshaw's nomination continues to stall, Paul Atkins may fill the vacancy.
Odaily Planet Daily News According to reports, the re-election vote for SEC Commissioner Caroline Crenshaw in the US Senate is still "to be determined". If the nomination continues to stall, President-elect Trump may choose Republican Paul Atkins to fill her vacancy on the five-member commission as her term expires. Under regulations, Crenshaw can only serve on the SEC until January 2026 if no one else is confirmed for her position. Earlier this month, Trump announced Atkins as his pick to lead the agency. Chair Gary Gensler and Commissioner Jaime Lizárraga are both Democrats, planning to leave the SEC in January. The SEC can have up to five commissioners, but no more than three from the same party. Tyler Gellasch, Chairman of the Healthy Markets Association, said that failing to confirm Crenshaw for reappointment could result in the agency losing crucial political perspectives. Gellasch stated in an email sent on December 10th, "Shifting to single-party control of the SEC means that the agency's rulemaking and enforcement efforts could shift from one ideological extreme to another, seriously jeopardizing the United States' position as a major global market." Senate Majority Leader and Senator Tim Scott said last week that he opposes the nomination efforts of Crenshaw and other Biden nominees during the lame-duck session. Scott stated in an email statement on December 6th, 'The Democrats' last-minute push to force through President Biden's nominations is a blatant obstruction of President Trump's agenda.' (Bloomberg)
